Bas Devos

Bas Devos (Belgium, 1983) studied at LUCA School of Arts in Brussels and directed the short films The Close (2008) and We Know (2009). In 2014 he made his feature debut with Violet, a film about fifteen-year-old Jesse who witnessed the violent murder of his friend Jonas and about his inability to talk about it with others. The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Grand Prix of the Generation 14plus International Jury. Five years later, Bas Devos returned to Berlin with Hellhole (2019), a film that interweaves the stories of three lost Brussels residents in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on March 22, 2016. Less than three months later, in May 2019, his next film Ghost Tropic was selected for the Quinzaine des réalisateurs in Cannes. The film follows the fifty-eight-year-old Khadija who, after a long day at work, falls asleep on the last subway train. When she wakes up at the end of the line, she has no choice but to make her way home on foot. On her nocturnal journey she finds herself compelled to ask for and give help to the other inhabitants of the night. In 2023, his fourth feature film, Here, a Brussels city symphony about human connection and the sense of belonging, was selected for festivals such as Film Fest Ghent and the Berlinale, where it won the Encounters Award for Best Film. In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Bas Devos teaches film at KASK and works as a freelance lighting designer for theatre and dance.

A gentle construction worker from Brussels is about to leave for his homeland Romania. He meets a young, Belgian-Chinese woman who is doing doctoral research on mosses. A fragile plea for more rapprochement, to the world and each other.
